Pre-shoot checklist

Twenty minutes now, better photos forever.

Send this to your vendor a day or two before the shoot. A ready home gets more and better photos, and we're out within the hour. We can tidy small things in editing, but we can't fix what we can't see.

General

Turn on every light and lamp; replace any blown globes
Open all curtains and blinds
Clean windows and glass doors
Turn off ceiling fans and TVs
Put pets and their beds, bowls and toys out of sight

Kitchen

Clear benchtops of appliances, chopping boards and tea towels
Remove fridge magnets, notes and photos
Empty the sink and put away detergent and sponges
Hide bins, and remove highchairs and booster seats

Living and dining

Remove remotes, magazines, cords and chargers
Clear coffee and side tables, leaving only decor
Put away children's toys
Straighten cushions and throws

Bedrooms

Make beds with fresh linen; add throws and pillows
Clear bedside tables, leaving only a lamp or decor
Nothing visible under beds
Close wardrobe doors and clear tops of drawers

Bathrooms

Clear vanities of soap, toothbrushes and products
Toilet seats and lids down
Remove bath mats and bath toys; hang fresh towels
Clear products from the shower
Clean shower screens and mirrors

Outside

Cars in the garage or down the street; garage door closed
Bins out of sight
Mow and edge lawns; sweep paths, decks and driveway
Remove hoses, toys, pet items and pool cleaners
Pool cover off, water clear
Outdoor furniture straightened, cushions on

For twilight shoots

Every light on, inside and out, including garden and pool lights
Blinds open so rooms glow from the street
Be ready 30 minutes before sunset; we shoot in a 20-minute window
